The Duck River
"The Duck" is 284 miles long and home to over 50 species of freshwater mussels and 151 species of fish. In addition to its aquatic biodiversity, the Duck River supports an estimated 150,000 kayakers, anglers, and boaters and serves as a water source for nearly 250,000 residents in Middle Tennessee. The Duck River holds the No.1 spot for Most Biodiverse River in North America and ranks in the top 5 most biodiverse rivers in the WORLD. In fact, according to National Geographic, our beloved Duck River ranks along with the Amazon River.
Duck River Designated a Class II Pastoral Scenic River
The Duck River has been officially designated as a Class II Pastoral Scenic River, recognizing its exceptional natural beauty, rural character, and ecological importance. This designation reflects the river's scenic landscapes, healthy ecosystems, and the agricultural and forested lands that have shaped the watershed for generations.

A Class II Pastoral Scenic River is characterized by landscapes where farms, woodlands, rolling hills, and small communities coexist with a free-flowing river. These areas retain their natural and scenic qualities while supporting sustainable land uses that respect the river's unique character.

WHY IS MUSSEL POWER SPECIAL?
The Duck River is home to some of the richest and most diverse mussel population in the world.
Mussels are a valuable asset to the Duck River due to their ability to filter up to 15-gallons of water per day. More mussel power, means better water!
If we were to lose our "mussel power", the Duck River's water quality would suffer significantly.
GROWTH IS COMING...
There is no way to deny, growth is knocking on our door. Nashville expanded into Franklin, then leaked into Spring Hill, TN. However, we need long term fixes, not short-term infrastructure "band-aids". It is up to us to find a long term solutions and consider the bigger picture. We need to update infrastructure in a sustainable manner that does not damage the health of the No1. Most Biodiverse River in the nation.
